The Despairing

Rhoda was becoming despondent.

Another argument was about to erupt in the tent.

Rhoda could already tell, from his stance, that yet again her voice would be denied. She turned away to avoid seeing the over familiar roll of Helios's eyes, retreating into the back of his skull; thinking to herself ‘I hate that!’

Rhoda knew from a lifetime of experience, that was her cue to fall silent. Had she been able to get a word in edgeways, they would have flown straight over his head. Helios had already deafened his ears to her words. Trying to fit them in was pointless!

Rhoda was well-trained in her inevitable silences. It was an unhealthy habit, established since her earliest memories; having met ‘Speech Obstacles’ everywhere for the last forty-five years. It was as if an automatic mute button governed her, and apparently it came with a universal remote control! She did not understand how this pattern had developed; knowing how she always allowed others to speak and have their views considered. She had found throughout her entire life that her part of conversations; were limited to two word responses.
